Leigh on Sea Tin Teams UK

What we do

Leigh-on-Sea Tin Team collects donations for people who are in need during the COVID-19 crisis. We are a group of Leigh-on-Sea residents who were inspired by the weekly clapping for carers and organised to gather supplies for local foodbanks from our neighbours.

Started by Vicky Casson, supported by her post on the Marine Estate Residents’ Facebook group, it all began with neighbours leaving tins of food on their walls or driveways to be collected immediately following the ‘Thursday Clap’ for NHS and keyworkers.  Donations were delivered to Southend Foodbank or one of the other charities cooking and providing for street homeless people who had been placed in temporary housing, often without cooking facilities, during lockdown.

When weekly clapping came to an end in June so many Leigh Tin Team road collectors and residents had joined in that the growing group decided to make monthly collections. This endeavour is supported by a colourful poster painted by Esme Taylor and Gemma Cudlipp, inspired by Warhol’s Campbell’s soup image. Collectors leaflet their road in the week leading to the collection date, this reminds neighbours to add items to their shopping list.   Everything collected is delivered to Southend-area food banks and shelters. You can click to donate to individual organisations below where some detail is given; further information can be found on the websites of all of these organisations.

Part of national organisation The Trussell Trust, Southend Foodbank has a warehouse plus distribution centres - each of these runs a 2 hour session on a set day every week, Monday to Saturday, in six locations across town.  Access is via a voucher which can be issued (including in an emergency) by a range of agencies including social workers, health visitors, Citizens Advice Bureau and some schools.

Southend Communities Outreach Group (SCOG) Foodbank is based in the Balmoral Community Centre, Salisbury Avenue, Westcliff on Sea SS0 7AU. It focuses on providing additional support close to home to local, vulnerable people with complex issues who struggle to access other foodbanks for many different reasons.  Unlike other foodbanks in Southend, people are able to self-refer and it does not limit the number of vouchers; meaning people can access it for as long as they need, whenever they need.

If you would like to support the SCOG Foodbank by donating either food or money, please contact them via their Facebook page

HARP provides essential services and long term solutions for local people taking steps to overcome homelessness. Homelessness is a diverse and complex issue and homelessness is often hidden e.g. when people without a permanent home are ‘sofa-surfing’, sleeping rough away from danger or moving between very temporary places.

SVP is involved in supporting homeless people through the Winter Night Shelter scheme. Volunteers also help vulnerable people within our community who need a hand with bills, food parcels, necessities, emotional and spiritual support and other services.

How to help

The Leigh-on-Sea Tin Team volunteers collect on the first Thursday evening or first Saturday morning of each month. This helps replenish stocks of much needed items at our local foodbanks and homeless shelters.

Each road has a Tin Team collector who lives in that street.  If you would like to find out who yours is or (if your road doesn’t have anyone collecting) you would like to volunteer to become a Tin Team Collector – please just fill in the form.  We are all volunteers, so please give us a few days to get back to you.

If you live in Leigh-on-Sea or surrounding areas please help by donating, even if just one item – every little helps! Leaflets will be dropped through your door telling you which day/time the collector in your road has chosen that month. Most collectors are also happy for you to drop donations to them at a time that suits you – look out for the Leigh Tin Team leaflet in their window!

If you have already donated thank you for your generosity; sadly there are many people in need in Southend, more so than ever with the impact of Covid-19.
